Being inspired by both American artist Greer Lankton and traditional Guatemalan worry dolls, Jane and Polly, the Creator and Protector elicits feelings of discomfort and unease through the distorted yet anthropomorphic doll, ‘Jane,’ however to combat the anxiety caused by Jane, feelings of protection and reassurance are created from the traditional doll, ‘Polly.’

The Bilum Bag is part of the rich heritage that is within Papua New Guinea. It is used to carry foods, goods, and newborn infants. The word "bilum" is also Tok Pisin for "Womb", where all life begins.
My intention with this installation, is to reflect on my journey from tribal violence in my birth country, to my life in Australia, the toll of separations from birth family, and to some extent, the guilt for what I’m so privilege to have now.

Ideas behind the work…
My work centers around common misconceptions about mental health among teenagers as well as an under-recognized reality. Stereotypically, teenagers are known to be moody and angsty individuals. I portray this concept with the cyanotype prints positioned on the exterior of the lanterns. Each print aims to further emphasise these stereotypes and symbolize how people commonly see teenagers. The interior of the lanterns are utilized to demonstrate the underlooked realities of what it means to be a teenager in the 21st century. These images contradict stereotypes by illustrating teenagers in a more optimistic and positive light. Each image is a candid photograph taken to depict an unfabricated moment of happiness or joy in typically teenage life.
